About Dr. Emmett Velten:
I am a clinical psychologist licensed in Arizona (0313) and California (PSY 7106) and have forty years of professional experience. My bachelor's degree in psychology is from the University of Chicago and PhD in clinical psychology is from the University of Southern California. My dissertation produced the Velten Mood Induction Procedure, which is widely used in research on mood states.
I had a long-term association with the Dr. Albert Ellis and the Albert Ellis Institute, where I served for nine years on its Board of Trustees. As well, I was a training supervisor and a member of its Board of Professional Advisors. I have been on the clinical faculty at the University of California, San Francisco;
taught at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco; and am a Volunteer Advisor to Self Management And Recovery Training (SMART Recovery®), a past president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, and editor of SMART Recovery’s newsletter.
With Dr. Albert Ellis I co-authored two books, When AA Doesn’t Work for You:
Rational Steps To Quitting Alcohol, and
Optimal Aging: Get Over Getting Older, which is also available in Spanish,
Envejecer con Plenitud. I was editor and wrote three chapters in
Under the Influence: Reflections of Albert Ellis in the Work of Others. Published in early 2010 was
REBT for People with Co-occurring Problems: Albert Ellis in the Wilds of Arizona, by
me and Patricia E. Penn, PhD; and coming out later in 2011 is Albert Ellis: American Revolutionary. I have published numerous articles on addiction. With Dr. Carlene Sampson, I co-authored
Rx for Learning Disability.
Most therapists list their specialties as particular types of situational or emotional problems, such as domestic violence and depression, or types of people, such as children. Unlike them, I specialize in a method of therapy and self-help that applies to a wide array of situational and emotional problems.
In my practice, I most often work with problems of everyday living, such as addictions, depression; anxiety disorders, such as social fears, panic, phobias, and OCD; shyness and dating/mating problems; procrastination, indecision, and other productivity problems; and life transition issues. My private practice office is in Phoenix, Arizona.
